Tutoring

neighborhood tutoring

The goal of our tutoring ministry is to love and serve students and families in Jesus’ name. While academics are important, we prioritize the relationships that develop between tutors and students, which often provide the best conduit for the Gospel message.

The children in our tutoring program are from around the world and, for many of them, English is their second language. Navigating the school system and dealing with deadlines are often new and unusual experiences–as well as opportunities for tutors to support students acclimating to a new culture.

Individual Tutoring

We ask that out tutors commit to meeting with their students for one hour each week during the school year (meeting during school breaks is optional). You and your student will decide together which day of the week and time are best.

For more information about becoming a tutor or to apply, please contact Shangwok Deng.

Most tutors and students meet at WEPC or at a Henrico county public library. If you decide to meet at the church, please contact Ann Long or Kristin Tetterton.

We also strongly recommend that you give your student a reminder call each week the day of or the day before you meet. Trust us!

Math Tutoring

To give our neighborhood kids a boost in math class, we have started a Math Tutoring program on Wednesday nights, 5:00 to 6:00 PM, in room 23.

Led by Jim Davis, Professor of Mathematics at the University of Richmond, Math Tutoring is open to children of all ages studying everything from fractions to exponents to parabolic equations.

If you would like to join Dr. Davis in helping our neighborhood friends with math, please contact him.
